LU faculty ratify deal

Laurentian University professors have finally put to rest student fears about an impending strike by ratifying a collective agreement with the university's administration.

Laurentian University professors have finally put to rest student fears about an impending strike by ratifying a collective agreement with the university's administration.

About 94 percent of union members voted in favour of the deal, giving Laurentian professors a 3.3 percent pay hike retroactive to June 1, and more pay increases over the next three years. The move puts the professors close to the provincial average compared to the earnings of their peers.

During negotiations, salary was a major concern for the union, who said their members averaged $8,600 less per year than other professors in Ontario.

The ratified deal must still be rubber-stamped by Laurentian's board of governors, who are set to hold a meeting Friday.
