A member of the Laurentian University Voyageurs hockey team has been charged with sexual assault, Sudbury.com has learned.

The player, Blake Luscombe, is no longer with the team and is no longer a member of the university. The 21-year-old forward was charged Nov. 15 with one count of sexual assault under section 271 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

He'll appear in court in Sudbury Dec. 14. Few other details are available ahead of the court date, such as when the incident allegedly occurred, where and nature of the alleged assault.

Laurentian Chief of Staff Alex Freedman said Monday he couldn't comment on the situation because of privacy rules. But Sudbury.com has learned the incident took place away from campus and was not connected to any university event or function.

This is the latest incident involving varsity players at the school. In October, it emerged that five players from the school's basketball team were suspended because of a hazing incident stemming from a rookie night Sept. 24.

The students later apologized and three have been reinstated to the team. The other two are expected to return early next year.
