LU new home to mining excellence centre

Plans for a new Centre of Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) were unveiled Friday at Laurentian University.

Plans for a new Centre of Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) were unveiled Friday at Laurentian University.

The centre is an initiative of the Ontario Mineral Industry Cluster Council (OMICC), and would undertake state-of-the-art research on mining exploration, deep mining, integrated mine process engineering, telerobotics and reclamation.

Leading the drive to establish the centre is John Gammon, the former assistant deputy minister of the mines and minerals division of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.

"Our priority in the immediate future will be to bring together the key players in this initiative to identify and secure the required resources to make this world-class centre a reality," said Gammon, in a release.

"An interim board of directors for CEMI is being put together to lead the centre's development and implementation."

Dr. Judith Woodsworth, president of Laurentian University, is grateful that her school has been chosen to house the centre. In 2004, the university adopted a vision to become a national centre of excellence in mining innovation.

"This is a significant endorsement of the quality of our mining-related programs, researchers, professors and students," she said.

"The university has already invested resources to get this project underway. We now appeal to government and industry partners to make it a reality."

For more information, phone Gammon at 675-1151, ext. 2197.
