Nearly $6,000 was raised last week by staff and students at Laurentian University after Canadian Red Cross officials solicited donations on campus.

Those who were unable to donate and who would like to support disaster relief are reminded the Canadian government will match donations to recognized aid agencies.

As well, donations made by end of business today (Tuesday) may be applied as a deduction to 2004 tax returns.

Several organizations are among those eligible for federal matching funds, including the World University Service Canada (www.wusc.ca), the Canadian Red Cross (www.redcross.ca), and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Canada (www.unicef.ca).

The Sudbury Multicultural and Folk Arts Association, in collaboration with Laurentian University, will host a benefit concert on Sunday, January 30, at 2 p.m., in the University's Fraser Auditorium.

This concert will feature country music artist Anita Perras and a host of local performing artists. All funds collected will go towards the Canadian Red Cross. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children, and $15 for families. Tickets will be available next week.

Also, the Sudbury Multicultural and Folk Arts Association, in collaboration with the Sudbury branch of the Canadian Red Cross, will pursue its fundraising campaign on campus.

Leading this campaign are Dr. Ozhand Ganjavi, Dr. Laxman "Lucky" Amaratunga and Dr. Ramesh Subramanian, who are canvassing on campus for donations.

For more information, please Ganjavi at 675-1151, ext. 2138; Amaratunga at 675-1151, ext. 2296; and Subramanian at 675-1151, ext. 2274.
