LU to offer radiation therapy degree

Dr. Rizwan Haq, dean of science and engineering, says the new programs exemplifies Laurentian?s commitment to students and health education and training in Northern Ontario.

The four-year bachelor of science program in radiation therapy will be offered at Laurentian?s department of physics and astronomy and will accept students in September 2003.

The curriculum will include a combination of courses offered on the Laurentian campus with specialized courses in distance-education format provided by the Michener Institute, based in Toronto.

Extensive clinical training will be provided by the Northeastern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre in Sudbury and other modern clinical sites.

Radiation therapy is the treatment of cancer using radiation in the form of X-rays, gamma rays and electrons.

Radiation therapists work as a vital part of any cancer treatment team, together with physicians and physicists, to administer the prescribed radiation treatment with care, compassion and respect.
