Marleau denied the Speaker's chair

Sudbury MP Diane Marleau has lost her bid to become the next Speaker of the House of Commons.

Sudbury MP Diane Marleau has lost her bid to become the next Speaker of the House of Commons.

The veteran politician entered the race when parliament re-opened Monday morning, but was beat out by fellow Liberal MP Peter Milliken, who was Speaker in the last session.

Milliken, 59, was considered the favourite in the vote. Liberal MP Marcel Proulx also ran to become Speaker.

The three candidates presented brief speeches before members of parliament voted by secret ballot. Candidates need 51 percent of the vote to get the Speaker's job.

Marleau told Northern Life last month that if elected Speaker, she would restore respect to the House of Commons. She admitted her bid was a bit of a long shot, but said she had some support among her colleagues.
