Paul Martin, the leader of the defeated Liberal government, won his seat in the riding of LaSalle-Émard in Quebec, but announced shortly after midnight Tuesday morning he will not continue as leader of the Liberal Party, which will sit in opposition.

Martin, 67, has been a member of Parliament since 1988.

Pierre Trudeau, defeated by the Joe Clark's Progressive Conservatives in 1979, also announced he would resign as leader of the Liberal Party. Before a new leader was chosen, the Clark government had fallen. Trudeau came back to lead the Liberals and win the election in 1980.
