A hefty donation of 6,000 masks from Glencore’s Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations has been delivered to the Samaritan Centre to serve more vulnerable populations.

The masks were delivered through United Way Centraide North East Ontario/Nord-est de l’Ontario.

“When the Samaritan Centre indicated they were in urgent need of masks, we reached out to our network of supporters,” UWCNEO executive director Mary Lou Hussak said in a media release. “We are grateful to Glencore for filling the need.”

In a media release, UWCNEO noted that accessing a mask isn’t always easy for people who rely on social services, and that as the pandemic drags on, keeping the community safe remains a priority.

“These masks will see us through the upcoming winter months and ensure the continued safety and well-being of the vulnerable individuals we serve,” Samaritan Centre executive director Lisa Long said. “We would like to thank the United Way for their generous efforts in securing 6,000 masks for our beloved clients.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 27,000 masks have been distributed throughout the community thanks to the UWCNEO’s Community Response Fund.
