Greater Sudbury mayoral candidate Patricia Mills says Mayor Brian Bigger's decision to write a letter to Premier Doug Ford, asking that the LPAT process on the Kingsway Entertainment District be accelerated, “displays a disregard for due process.”

Of “utmost concern is the decision to issue the letter without the knowledge of the elected councillors who have a direct stake in the outcome,” she said in a news release.

“The lack of openness and transparency jeopardizes the public’s trust and makes it more difficult for the next mayor and council to build support for the project.”

Statement by Patricia Mills

Re: Mayor’s Letter to Premier Ford

The mayor’s decision to write a letter to the Premier asking for the LPAT process to be accelerated displays a disregard for due process. It’s not the first time we’ve moved forward without the appropriate due diligence and the result has brought legal and financial risk to the project.

As for the mayor’s response that he was seeking clarification, it should be obvious that one doesn’t write the Premier for clarity on a process. That’s why we have staff and legal counsel.

But of utmost concern is the decision to issue the letter without the knowledge of the elected councilors who have a direct stake in the outcome. The lack of openness and transparency jeopardizes the public’s trust and makes it more difficult for the next mayor and council to build support for the project.
