Mechanical sensor start-up wins Sudbury pitch competition

Third NORCAT Pitch event showcased four Sudbury companies

Daryl Dominique walked away from the third annual NORCAT Pitch event with $25,000 in services to help his start-up company, called Hexic Monitoring Systems, grow.

Dominique won the People’s Choice Award at the event, which featured four entrepreneurs, approved by the NORCAT Innovation Mill, who pitched their new businesses to three expert judges and any potential investors in the audience.

Through Hexic Monitoring Systems Dominique has developed a sensor that tracks the integrity of hex nuts, and other mechanical systems on vehicles to prevent mechanical failures before they happen.

He has targeted Sudbury’s mining sector first, to use the system on underground vehicles, but said the sensor could be used in the automotive sector as well.

The Judges’ Choice Award went to Patrick Danielson for his company FORMid.

Danielson, who teaches part-time at the Laurentian School of Architecture, has designed a chair that can be custom-made for each individual to improve their posture and avoid the health problems associated with sitting for too long in an office environment.

The chair resembles a triangular stool, has 360 degrees of motion and is made of lightweight paper substrate.

Once the chair hits the market clients will be able to enter their measurements online to have it fitted to their dimensions.

Sudbury.com will have more on the winners and the Pitch competition tomorrow.
