Students at NOSM U are holding a March 6 trivia night to raise funds for victims of the massive earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey on Feb. 6.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and claimed thousands of lives.

“Nearly 530,000 people have been evacuated from Turkey alone and the death toll has climbed to above 50,000,” first-year student Tafheem-Un Nisa, one of the organizers, told Sudbury.com. “As someone who was personally impacted by the 2006 earthquake in Pakistan, my motivation has been putting myself in the shoes of millions that are impacted right now in the Middle East.”

The trivia event is March 6 at Laughing Buddha. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a 7 p.m. start Tickets are $10.

Those interested can register at the door or in advance here. You can also purchase tickets in advance here.

“Our fundraiser is a small attempt to help those who have been affected,” NIsa said. “It is open to everyone in the Sudbury area to come to support by either attending or donating virtually. There will be sponsored prizes from ARC Climbing & Yoga, Simplicity Natural Foods, and we have reached out to additional local businesses for support.”

For more information, you can also visit the event Facebook page.

NOSM U holds its mandate of social accountability at the center of our medical education and encourages students to apply it in both our personal and professional lives. Hosting this event and contributing to the global effort to support the victims of the earthquake are small ways in which we hope to be socially accountable. I am excited to see the local community come together to support this cause.
