A wall that lists the names of the city?s fallen war heroes is being established in Memorial Park.

A committee representing local branches of the Royal Canadian Legion and the City of Greater Sudbury is asking citizens to submit names for the wall.

To qualify for inscription, the person must be among the war dead and either born in Greater Sudbury or a resident at the time of enlistment in military service.

Military service includes navy, army, air force, merchant navy and peacekeeping missions.

?The citizens of Greater Sudbury remember the service and sacrifice of our war veterans,? said Mayor David Courtemanche.

?The Memorial Wall will be a place of honour and reflection. It will commemorate the courage and gallantry of those who served our country. And it will be a salute to our peacekeeping forces who even today stand guard over our homes and our families.?

The wall of remembrance will be constructed next to the Memorial Park cenotaph in downtown Sudbury.

The addition of the wall will bring the millennium project to enhance Memorial Park close to completion.

The millennium project began in 1997 and included construction of a new cenotaph and water fountain.

?The Memorial Wall committee has a mission to collect names of all local citizens enlisted in military service whose names are among the war dead,? said committee chair Bill Lee.

?We need the public?s help to succeed in our mission. It is imperative that we, the living, do our duty and not miss a single soul.?

Ted Durbacz , the City of Greater Sudbury committee representative, says close to 600 names have already been gathered for inscription.

?Each Legion branch has a Book of Remembrance,? he explained. ?But we want to make sure we have collected every name possible. The final design of the Memorial Wall will be contingent on the number of inscriptions.?

To submit a name for inscription, citizens are asked to complete an application form available at all Legion brances and at citizen service centres, or on the City of Greater Sudbury website at www.greatersudbury.ca. Names will be verified by the Memorial Wall Committee through Veterans Affairs Canada. For more information, contract
Durbacz at the city by phoning 671-CITY (2489).
