The Northern Credit Union, based in Sault Ste. Marie has announced a friendly merger with the Sudbury area Nickel Centre Credit Union.

The merger received approval from Nickel Centre members at its annual general meeting April 23.

Northern Credit Union CEO, Al Suraci said the merger is a step towards creating ?a real alternative to mass market banks in our communities...

?A financial institution that is tailored for life and growing businesses here as opposed to the dictates of Toronto. Merging with Nickel Centre is an important step in this direction,? Suraci said.

There will be no overlapping of branches, branch closures or job losses, according to Suraci. It is an opportunity to have a presence in Northern Ontario.

?If anything, there should be job growth,? Suraci said. ?We see a growth in the Sudbury market place, and our business plan shows that.?

Suraci explained that the merger should create career development, job security and job enrichment for the Sudbury employees.
