Mine rescue teams coming to Nickel City next month

Sudbury to host 10th International Mines Rescue Competition

Mine rescue teams from around the globe will meet in Sudbury for the 10th International Mines Rescue Competition (IMRC) from Aug. 19 to 26.

The city awarded event host, Ontario Mine Rescue (OMR) the flower garden at Bell Park in honour of this 10th biennial event.

“We are thrilled to welcome the 2016 International Mines Rescue Competition to Canada for the first time. Thirty mine rescue teams from more than a dozen nations will meet in Sudbury, one of Canada’s proudest mining communities, to compete in mine emergency simulations and share best practices in crisis management,” said Ted Hanley, OMR General Manager.

“We encourage Sudburians to support this event and help the teams feel welcome while they’re in Canada.”

The Grace Hartman Amphitheatre in Bell Park will be the site of the IMRC 2016 opening ceremonies Sunday, Aug. 21.

The event is hosted by Workplace Safety North and Ontario Mine Rescue and approximately 30 teams representing 20 nations are expected to compete in different events including an underground scenario, firefighting, first aid and more.

The Sudbury Basin Cobras from KGHM, along with Valley West Mines are two Sudbury teams that will represent team Canada at the competition.
