More than 400 participants are expected to run, dig, crawl and laugh their way through the Kivi Park Move Fitness Series in June.

They will tackle a 6.5-kilometre Miner's Mayhem course on June 22. The event has established a strong following of participants, who come back year after year, never knowing what mining-themed obstacles will test their mettle. With a new venue, there are sure to be more than a few new obstacles to surprise and challenge repeat and rookie “miners” alike, said organizers in a press release.

Presented in collaboration with Adventure365, the event provides “hardcore” and “light duty” athletes with the opportunity to challenge themselves and have fun.

“We’re delighted to be back as a partner for The Miner’s Mayhem, and are thrilled that the event will also support the Northern Cancer Foundation,” said Adventure365 owner, Derek Bain. “This event has grown year after year, and last year’s move to Kivi Park has really boosted interest in the event. There were lots of unexpected challenges and surprises, which participants in these events love.”

Along with the individual participant option, the Miner's Mayhem 2019 will include the Stantec Team Challenge again this year. Hugely popular since it was established in 2015, the Team Challenge promotes the spirit of mine rescue, where ''no miner is left behind.”

Groups of five will have a single timing chip as they tackle the course together, and they must cross the finish line as a team.

In addition to supporting the Northern Cancer Foundation, a portion of the proceeds will once again support Muscular Dystrophy Canada (MDC), which is nationally and locally supported by career and volunteer firefighters.

“We are thrilled that the Mayhem will support Muscular Dystrophy Canada again this year,” said Volunteer Firefighters District spokesperson Tammy Joyce. “MDC is near and dear to the hearts of all of our firefighters, and we are so pleased to be able to partner on this event to raise money for families living with and affected by a neuromuscular disease. Miner’s Mayhem gave us a big boost again last year, and we’re looking forward to having a blast once again, when we volunteer on event day.”

Similarly, the Northern Cancer Foundation benefits from the success of The Mayhem, and with the fact 100 per cent of both charities’ funds remain in Sudbury, event organizers are hoping to raise even more than the $6,500 they contributed to these important causes in 2018.

Event details and registration are now available at Adventure365 at 444 Barrydowne Rd. and online at theminersmayhem.com. Interested participants who haven’t already registered are encouraged to do so before the next price increase at midnight on June 3 and to get in on the four-week bootcamps starting on May 21.

“The Mayhem is a blast and every year it just gets better,” said race director Jessica Sheppard-Baxter. “Round up a team or come on your own. You’ll love the challenge and will make a difference to Muscular Dystrophy Canada as well as our Northern Cancer Foundation.”
