Almost 10,000 people in Sudbury and Nickel Belt have already voted, says information released Tuesday by Elections Ontario.
In Sudbury, 4,780 people voted at five advance polling stations, Elections Ontario said. Advance polling was a little busier in Nickel Belt, where 5,148 people cast a ballot at one of the 13 polling stations.
There are 80,840 people in the riding of Sudbury, with around 61,000 eligible to vote. Nickel Belt has 84,520 people, with more than 58,000 of them eligible to vote.
Across the province, Elections Ontario said 768,895 people voted ahead of the June 7 election day, up from 647,261 who voted during the advanced period in the 2014 election.
On election day, 50 per cent of the polls will have vote tabulators and e-Poll book, serving 90 per cent of electors.
Voter Information Cards with details about when and where to vote have been mailed to registered electors. Voters are reminded to bring their VIC and one piece of identification to vote. Voting location information is also available at www.elections.on.ca.
“We are modernizing Ontario’s elections in a measured and principled way to give electors a better voter experience,” Greg Essensa, Ontario’s Chief Electoral Officer, is quoted as saying in a news release. “Technology in the polls made voting even easier for electors who chose to vote during advance voting, and we are very pleased with the positive feedback we have received across the province.
“We invite electors who have not yet voted to cast their ballots on election day on June 7.”
