More than 1,100 home-made cloth masks have been donated to Health Sciences North through the HSN Mask Challenge that launched on Thursday, April 9.

To help keep the community healthy and safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, HSN said it has partnered with Sudbury Steam Cleaners and issued a challenge to all Northeastern Ontario sewers to make as many cloth face masks as possible.

These masks are being given out to all approved visitors, patients who are going home, as well as members of the broader community. More than 950 have been given out so far.

The cloth masks can be dropped off at Sudbury Steam Cleaners at 210 Walnut St., between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, in the covered bin labelled “Donated Masks Drop Off” outside of the front depot entrance.

Masks cannot be dropped off at HSN.

HSN asks that you put your sewn cloth masks in a plastic bag along with your name, mailing address, email address and phone number. Providing your contact information is optional and will be used by the Foundations at Health Science North to say thank you for participating in the HSN Mask Challenge and share updates on our progress.

This week, HSN celebrated as the first COVID-19 admitted to hospital to be placed on a ventilator was discharged.

“HSN wants to thank all staff in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, 6 South and to all support services at HSN for providing such important critical care to patients,” said the daily bulletin.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, HSN has had six patients admitted that have tested positive for COVID-19. Of these patients, two have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Three of the six patients have been discharged home.

There are currently two patients admitted to HSN who have tested positive for COVID-19. One of those patients is in the ICU. There are 11 patients currently under investigation with results pending. None of those patients are in the ICU.
