A motion that would have prohibited replacement workers from crossing picket lines was defeated in the House of Commons yesterday.

Among those who voted against the motion were 14 Liberal MPs, said Nickel Belt New Democrat MP Claude Gravelle.

"Workers have been asking the government to get rid of replacement workers for years. How can Liberal MPs vote against this motion and still claim to support working people and their families?" he asked.

Gravelle said scab labour "pits worker against worker and neighbour against neighbour."

The motion would have called on the government to introduce legislation to amend the Canadian Labour Code to prohibit the use of replacement workers in labour disputes while continuing to exempt essential services.
