MR 80 speed limit signs vandalized

Don't be fooled by vandalized signs, speed limit is still 70 km/h

Several speed limit signs on MR 80 in Valley East were vandalized on the weekend.

A pair of members of the Valley East Facebook group posted photos of signs that had the number eight spray painted over the seven.

Last month, Greater Sudbury council approved a bylaw to reduce the speed limit on the stretch of road between Yorkshire Drive and St. Mary Boulevard in Hanmer from 80 km/h to 70 km/h.

It would appear as though someone who uses the nearly four kilometer stretch of road disagrees with the decision and took it upon themselves to express their displeasure.

Ward 5 Coun. Robert Kirwan is the councillor for Valley East and he says he's disappointed that someone would vandalize the signs, and that he doesn't condone vandalism in any way.

"If someone's going to take it upon themselves to try to change speed limit signs, they're putting other drivers in danger," said Kirwan.

"I've driven that stretch of road since the changes were made (on Thursday) and people are definitely slowing down. Mathematically that stretch of road takes an extra 22 seconds to drive with the speed limit reduced. It's not a lot of time and it gives drivers more time to react."

Greater Sudbury Police Staff Sgt. Sherry Young says that the person responsible would face mischief charges if caught.

"We would obviously need to identify the person responsible so it would be a tip from someone," said Young. "We'll have an officer go and check out these signs though, and then we'll contact the city to let them know and they would be the ones who clean the signs."

Kirwan has put the word out to those living in Valley East who may have seen who vandalized the signs to contact him.

"We'd like to find out who did it and hopefully have them pay for it," said Kirwan. "The roads department will have to change these signs. It definitely happened Friday night some time after 10 p.m. because I've spoken to a few people who were out driving between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. and they said the signs hadn't been spray painted at that time."

If anyone has any tips as to who may be responsible, they can contact the GSPS at 705-675-9171.
