Weeks after reporting debris from the underside of the overpass bridges on MR24 had fallen, damaging vehicles and injuring a child in a vehicle passing underneath, the underside of the overpasses have been scaled to remove loose material, France Gélinas said today.

In a news release, the Nickel Belt MPP said she raised the issue with Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca in the legislature.

Now that loose debris has been removed, Gélinas said not only will regular monitoring of the overpass bridges on MR24 occur, but the ministry is taking it a step further.

“I am happy to report that following more inquiries with MTO I have been advised that plans are underway by MTO to attach ‘construction debris netting’ to the bridges, so that pedestrians and motorists passing below would be protected from falling debris,” said Gélinas.

MTO reports that comprehensive rehabilitation of both bridges will begin next spring as part of a project to rehabilitate the four-lane section of Highway 17.
