Updated: Downed lines likely for telecommunications not electricity, GSU reports

Utility says no outages have been reported

Updated at 9:24 a.m.: Greater Sudbury Utilities tells Sudbury.com there are no reports of power outages in the city.

Spokesperson Wendy Watson said because the utility isn't registering any outages, it's likely reports of downed lines are telecommunication cables.

"We've sent crews to check things out," Watson said this morning. "We actually think they're telecommunication lines. Those are the ones that hang the lowest. Ours tend to be the highest" lines on a pole.

Once the GSU determines who owns the downed lines, the utility will reach out to the owner to notify them of the issue.

Should you come upon a downed line of any kind, stay away from it, Watson said, and report it either to the GSU or to Greater Sudbury Police (705-675-9171). You can report an outage here or call 705-675-7536 if you live in Greater Sudbury or 705-753-2341 if you live in West Nipissing.

Updated at 8:52 a.m.: Greater Sudbury Utilities says reports of downed lines haven't impacted electricity service for anyone, so it's possible reports of downed lines are communications or internet lines.

Sudbury.com is continuing to gather information. If you have reports to share of downed lines, please post them in the comments below, email them to [email protected] or tweet to @Sudburydotcom.
