Paul Truscott Jr. will assume new executive roles at Health Sciences North and Health Sciences North Research Institute, beginning on May 1, 2023.

Sudbury's Health Sciences North hospital will soon have a new senior vice-president and chief operating officer.

The appointment of Paul Truscott Jr. to those senior positions was announced Thursday by Health Sciences North president and CEO Dominic Giroux. Truscott has also been named as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI).

In his new job, Truscott will be responsible for leading finance, decision support, materials management, facilities and support services, a team of approximately 450 people and oversight of the annual budgets at HSN, and also at the Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI), said the news release.

Giroux said he was pleased with the appointment of the new member on the executive team.

“Paul brings 29 years of wide-ranging experience in Ontario public and private healthcare organizations,” said Giroux.

“He began his career in 1994 as a Cytogenetics Technologist at the Oshawa General Hospital and then spent more than a decade in senior private sector roles in areas like biopharma, lab services and medical device companies – before returning to the hospital sector."

Along with his extensive work history in hospitals, the release said Truscott has a significant academic background.

Truscott has an honours bachelor of science in molecular biology at the University of Toronto, completed the medical laboratory technology program at The Michener Institute of Applied Health Science, a master of business administration and a master’s certificate in health-care leadership at the Schulich School of Business at York University, and the CFO Leadership Development Program at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

Truscott is also a chartered professional accountant (CPA) as well as a certified health executive (CHE) with the Canadian College of Healthcare Leaders.

Truscott said in a news release he was pleased to join the team in Sudbury.

"HSN and HSNRI have incredible reputations in the health-care sector as places of excellence, so I can’t wait to get to Greater Sudbury and get to work with everyone toward our goal of growing to best serve the region moving forward,” he said.

The hospital said Truscott will take on the new roles on May 1, succeeding Max Liedke who is stepping down from the role this spring after 39 years, including the last four and a half years at HSN and HSNRI.
