After a season without their longtime floating dock on Ramsey Lake, Science North plans on installing a new structure by the end of June.
The previous floating dock had been in place for more than 30 years, extending the Jim Gordon Boardwalk along the portion of Ramsey Lake’s southern shore abutting Science North.
Despite prior efforts to extend its life, the dock reached the end of its serviceable life and was decommissioned last year.
As a result, the William Ramsey Boat Cruise was unable to dock at the location and had to shut down operations for the season.

With work on installing a replacement dock slated to begin next month and conclude by the end of June, a media release by Science North noted that they were in discussions with the boat’s operator to bring back the popular experience this summer.
Sudbury.com reached out to boat captain Rob Osborne, who said he was “hopeful” the William Ramsey Boat Cruise would launch this summer, but declined further comment for the time being due to details still needing to be hashed out.
“Plans are also underway to relaunch Science North’s seasonal patio, offering drinks and appetizers for visitors to enjoy by the waterfront,” Science North noted in a media release. “Stay tuned for more details as the summer heats up!”
The replacement floating dock was supported by the Government of Ontario and funded in part through a grant from the Trans-Canada Trail, in partnership with the Rainbow Routes Association, to enhance Greater Sudbury’s section of the national trail.
Science North has pledged to provide updates on the project’s progress through their website and social media channels.
