The Welland & District SPCA and the Ontario SPCA have partnered with the Wikwemikong Unceded Reserve – the Wiky Rez – on the eastern end of Manitoulin Island to provide mobile spay/neuter and animal wellness services.

The week-long event is wrapping up this week, and to date, 95 spay/neuter surgeries have been completed and another 24 spay/neuter surgeries are scheduled for Friday.

The Ontario SPCA and Welland & District SPCA have also provided wellness exams to 186 animals. An additional 50 animals are scheduled to be seen Friday.

This year, 30 students from the Veterinary Technician Program at Collège Boréal in Sudbury joined the teams.

The Ontario SPCA and Welland & District SPCA commend the students and Collège Boréal for their commitment to animal welfare.

"The Welland & District SPCA is pleased to be working with the Ontario SPCA to provide these essentials services to animals on Manitoulin Island," said John Greer, Executive Director, Welland & District SPCA in a news release.

"And we are fortunate to partner with Wikwemikong - the community has been overwhelmingly supportive. It's a win/win situation - especially for animals."

"The Ontario SPCA is honoured to be involved and to have the leadership of our Affiliate, the Welland & District SPCA,” said Judi Cannon, Associate Director, Indigenous Programs & Community Outreach, Ontario SPCA.

“We invite the public to support this project and others by donating to the Welland & District SPCA at wellandspca.com.
