When it comes to picking a hangout spot, Laurentian University students will have a choice to make.

Laurentian University and the Student General Association (SGA) recently announced that Capital Construction Inc. of Sudbury has been contracted to build a new student space on the campus.

The 15,000 sq. ft. building designed by Yallowega Bélanger Salach Architecture and Gow Hastings Architects will be built east of the Parker Building and connect the student residence to the main building.

The space will include an atrium with study and lounge facilities as well as private study rooms and an open concept games room. It will also feature a room for clubs, SGA administration offices, meeting rooms, retail space for a new coffee kiosk, an onsite dental hygienist, graduation photo space, and two retail areas for pop-up shops or potential future food services.

Laurentian University SGA office spearheaded the proposal by asking members to vote during a referendum held on March 19 and 20, 2014.

601 members voted in favour of the new building to be funded through a mandatory incidental fee. A value for the project was not provided.

Laurentian University has previous contracted Capital Construction Inc. for its the Animal Care Facility, the Great Hall renovation and the School of Education renovation.
