New Sudbury Days brings family fun to neighbourhood

Annual event inspired by past councillor Fabio Belli

Part of the New Sudbury Centre parking lot looked extra festive Saturday to host the second annual New Sudbury Days event.

Former Ward 8 Coun. Fabio Belli, who died suddenly in April 2014, inspired the community festival, which borrows a page from similar events across the city.

Rachelle Niemela, chair of the New Sudbury Days organizing committee, said a group of volunteers first got together last year to make Belli’s dream of a weekend-long event that would celebrate the New Sudbury neighbourhood a reality.

Saturday’s festivities included a car show – which continues Sunday – live music, a nature walk near the Adanac Ski Hill and a number of family-friendly games and activities at the New Sudbury Centre.

Sunday will include a couple of BBQs – one at Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault’s office and the other at Twin Forks Park – along with a Sudbury Cyclists Union community bike ride at Adanac Ski Hill and more live music at the mall parking lot.

In addition to a host of activities, New Sudbury days supports a number of local charities including the Sudbury Food Bank (people can donate food items and cash at the festival grounds), the Sam Bruno PET Scanner Fund and the Rally for Dad, which raises funds for prostate cancer research.

To collect funds for the latter two charities, the Northern Cancer Foundation is raffling a brand new Harley Davidson motorcycle. Tickets for the raffle are $10 each and can be purchased from a booth at the New Sudbury Centre parking lot.

New Sudbury Days will conclude Sunday night with a fireworks display at Rotary Park.
