New trail means safer highway crossing in Wahnapitae

It may be kind of short, but it wasn’t without a bit of fanfare that Rainbow Routes officially opened a new 500-metre stretch trail in Wahnapitae this morning.

The little-trail-that-could begins off Glenbower Crescent, near the park at the Wahnapitae Community Centre and runs along the Wahnapitae River.

"The 500m trail is not necessarily the longest of trails, but makes up for it with the scenic and charming feeling it offers," said a news release from Rainbow Routes.

Wahnapitae resident Daniel Venne first proposed the trail back in 1995. It took a little while, but Mr. Venne found the right partners with Rainbow Routes Association to make it happen.

With the help of the Wahnapitae Improvement Group, the trail was built entirely by volunteers in October 2016 and is already seeing substantial use.

Even better, the trail connects two residential areas divided by Highway 17, meaning pedestrians can avoid crossing what is a very busy stretch of road.
Ward 9 coun. Deb McIntosh was on hand for the opening, along with Discovery Routes Executive Director Jennifer McCourt.
