The downtown building that was formerly home to the men's clothing store Fiorino's at the Port now hosts a new walk-in clinic and separate addictions services centre.

“When this space became available we thought it was the perfect spot,” said Dr. Suman Koka, managing director of Northwood Medical Clinics, which expanded with a new location in downtown Sudbury on Oct. 17, 2016.

In addition to the walk-in-clinic, Koka said the building, located at 80 Elm Street, will also house addiction services, where three physicians will use opiate replacement therapy to help their patients kick hard drug habits.

Koka said Northwood has provided addictions services to First Nations on Manitoulin Island, and along the North Shore, but the downtown addictions services centre will be its first in Greater Sudbury.

Koka said there is a growing need for addictions services in Greater Sudbury as more synthetic opiates hit the streets.

“The problem is there's no quality control,” he said. “You can get a strong batch one day and the next day you think you're buying the same thing but you've got a different potency.”

That inconsistent potency makes it more likely for drug users to overdose because their bodies don't get accustomed to a certain dosage, he said.

Koka said patients can go to the walk-in-clinic clinic or addiction services centre – which have separate waiting rooms – without an appointment, or call ahead at 705-522-3380.
