After 1,175 days of chemotherapy, little Nicky Steinke is finally done his cancer treatment and is an official cancer survivor.

Surprised by mom with a bouquet of balloons and a bag full of snacks, the Grade 1 student at St. John Catholic Elementary School celebrated with students and staff at the school as well as staff with Discovery Early Learning and Care.

Swarmed with hugs, cards and well wishes from his schoolmates, Nicky also celebrated by ringing an old-fashioned school bell three times.

Cathy Burns of the Canadian Cancer society presented Nicky with a “survivor” stuffie as well as a baton he can use at Greater Sudbury's Relay for Life 2019, which takes place at Laurentian University June 21.

“Congratulations Nicky – we are so proud of you!” said a press release from the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.
