Nine new wildfires ignited in the Northeast region on May 14

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) confirmed nine new wildfires in the Northeast region by late afternoon on May 14. All of them are not under control yet. 

  • Bancroft 3 wildfire ignited approximately 2 kilometres northwest of Bark Lake in Highlands East Township. It occupies 0.1 of a hectare.
  • Algonquin Park 2 fire takes up 0.1 of a hectare, and it is located north of Biggar Lake. 
  • Algonquin Park 3 wildfire is situated approximately three kilometres south of Hwy 60 and south of Cache Lake.
  • Algonquin Park 4 fire, which measures 0.1 of a hectare, is located north of route 60 and south of Sunny Lake. 
  • Bancroft 4 fire, three kilometres north of Whitney, takes up  0.1 of a hectare.
  • North Bay 5 wildfire is one hectare long and is situated north of the boundary of Algonquin Park, four kilometres west of Kiosk. Water bombers and a lead bird dog aircraft were on the scene last evening.
  • North Bay 6 fire takes up two hectares and is located just east of Hwy 63, past the end of Old Mill Rd near Balsam Creek.
  • Sudbury 12 is located just east of the community of Falconbridge and occupies 0.1 of a hectare. 
  • Chapleau 4 fire measures 0.1 of a hectare, and it is located approximately six kilometres west of Alm Lake Forest and half a kilometre north of Keelow Lake. 

Including the new wildfires, there are 26 active fires in the Northeast region. They were confirmed on Tuesday afternoon, May 10. These fires include:

  • Timmins 1 fire ignited two kilometres southeast of Morin Village and half a kilometre north of Barager's Lake. Aerial fire suppression aircraft have been actively working on this wildfire at the time of this update. This fire shows increased "fire behaviour," and it's not under control yet. While it is estimated at 2000 hectares, it will be remapped when the smoke is decreased. 
  • Hwy 560 remains closed by Ontario Provincial Police at the junction of Hwy 144 and Elk Lake. The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry’s Timmins District has recommended the evacuation of Shining Tree residents. Conservation Officers & Ontario Provincial Police assisted with the precautionary evacuation Saturday afternoon.
  • Sudbury 4 is a 212-hectare fire located three kilometres east of Estaire and one kilometre south of Nepewassi Lake road. Water bombers, Twin Otters and belly-tanking helicopters tried to put out the fire on Tuesday and Wednesday. Seven Fire Ranger crews are continuing to work to suppress this fire.
  • Sudbury 7 fire is a 221-hectare fire located 600 metres north of Ashigami road and 0.3 kilometres west of Ashigami Lake Road East. Water bombers, Twin Otters and belly-tanking helicopters tried to suppress the fire on Tuesday and Wednesday. Five Fire Ranger crews are trying to take it under control.
  • Timmins 2 wildfire is a 57.5-hectare fire situated near Duchabani Creek, 1.5 kilometres northwest of Cullen Lake. It is being held at the moment. 
  • Chapleau 2 fire is a 60-hectare fire located 2.5 kilometres south of Hwy 101 and six kilometres west of Foleyet. It is under control.
