Nomination period ends with 9 candidates vying for mayor's seat

The nominations deadline for the Oct. 24 civic election ended at 2 p.m. Friday, and a final/official list of candidates for the municipal and school boards elections is anticipated early next week

Until the bitter end, it appeared as though Ward 9 Coun. Deb McIntosh was going to be in by acclamation, but last-minute registrations appear to signal a campaign for her council seat.

Shrugging off having to campaign for the Oct. 24 municipal election, McIntosh told Sudbury.com, “It’s an opportunity to connect with residents.”

“The people want to be involved in the political process, and I think that’s fabulous.”

The nomination period for the civic election closed at 2 p.m. Friday, and a final list of candidates is expected to be released by the city early this week.

Although the list posted online by late-afternoon Friday didn’t include anyone running against McIntosh at first, she told Sudbury.com she caught wind that someone had filed their papers at Tom Davies Square at the last minute. (There are indeed four candidates now listed in Ward 9).

“Apparently there was a lineup at 2 p.m.,” she said.

“Under the legislation the clerk has until Monday, August 22 to review and certify all nominations for office that have been received,” according to the city. “Each nomination received must be reviewed to ensure that the candidate has met all of the requirements and satisfied all of their legislative obligations to stand for office.”

Also notable in the city’s list of candidates as of Friday afternoon is the absence of Ward 12 Coun. Joscelyne Landry-Altmann, who’d told Sudbury.com as early as this week she was in the process of deciding whether she would run. The candidate list posted late Friday, showed that Landry-Altmann is indeed in the running with three other candidates.

Landry-Altmann has retained the seat since 2006. She faced four opponents in the 2018 election, whom she beat by securing approximately 62 per cent of the vote, similar to McIntosh.

Coming in at nine, this year’s tentative list of mayoral candidates is one short of the 11 counted in 2018, which Mayor Brian Bigger secured with 14,684 votes, or 28.32 per cent of the total vote.

Sudbury.com has written introductory stories on every one of this year’s slate of mayoral candidates except for convicted purveyor of hate speech David Popescu and local businessman Tony Monteleone, who did not list contact information with the city and has not answered phone messages left at Monteleone Custom Fashions & Tailoring. Monteleone has since withdrawn his nomination.

The balance of mayoral candidates include:

  • Brian Bigger, the incumbent candidate who has retained the seat since 2014 after serving as the city’s first auditor.
  • Evelyn Dutrisac, a past councillor in the Town of Rayside-Balfour, and later the amalgamated City of Greater Sudbury.
  • Don Gravelle, a man born and raised in Sudbury who currently works in the insurance industry.
  • Bob Johnston, an outspoken advocate for the city’s homeless community.
  • Devin Labranche, a local realtor.
  • Paul Lefebvre, a former tax lawyer and Liberal MP for Sudbury.
  • Miranda Rocca-Circelli, the owner and publisher of local real estate publications and the CEO and owner of Creative eLearning Design.
  • Mila Wong, a past city council member and retired registered nurse, human rights officer and qualified arbitrator and mediator.

Outside of Ward 7 Coun. Mike Jakubo, who announced he would not seek re-election several months ago, the incumbent candidates are registered to retain their seats in 11 of the city’s 12 wards.
