Representatives with the Responsible Gambling Council will be at the slots at Sudbury Downs for Problem Gambling Prevention Week, from Wednesday, Sept. 28 to Sunday, Oct. 2.

The Responsible Gambling Council is a non-profit organization that provides education and helps prevent problem gambling.

According to its own research, around 3.4 per cent of Ontarians have a moderate to severe gambling problem.

In the Greater Sudbury, Manitoulin and Sudbury Districts, this would equate to around 5,200 adults.

The theme for this year's Problem Gambling Prevention week is “listen to yourself.”

“If you're starting to feel guilty or anxious about your gambling, or it's not as fun as it used to be, those are definitely some warning signs you shouldn't ignore,” said Heather Ly, project co-ordinator for Problem Gambling Prevention Week.

Ly said people should not treat gambling as a way to make money, but should instead look at it as a form of entertainment.

If someone's gambling starts to interfere with their personal relationships, or begins to affect their finances, they should seek help.

Ly recommended people visit the campaign website to learn about the warning signs for problem gambling, and seek professional help if they have a more serious gambling problem.

The Sudbury Mental Health and Addictions Centre offers gambling and addictions services for the region.
