“In Southern Ontario, the request for proposals for casino operators must include horse racing,” she said. “The premier said she was thrilled that there was racing in Fort Erie, but in Northern Ontario, there is no racing.
“The contract with Sudbury Downs has been cancelled, 100 jobs have been lost, along with terrible blows to the agriculture industry. Will the Premier give Northern Ontario the same deal it gives southern Ontario and make sure that the RFP for casino operators in Sudbury includes horse racing?”
Gélinas said while the province moved fast to cancel the Slots-at-Racetracks Program, and tracks like Sudbury Downs suffered immediate losses, there is still no sign of an RFP the government said would be issued in 2012.
