Northeastern Elementary School will host a school-wide survival event to promote literacy Feb. 24.

Called SURVIVE THIS!, the Indoor/Outdoor Wilderness Survival Challenge will feature activities for students from junior kindergarten to Grade 8.

Students will participate in multi-grade teams to build camaraderie. The teams will combine English and French Immersion programs and students with special needs. Grade 8 students will have an opportunity to develop leadership skills as captains.

Activities will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Indoor activities will include drama with survival props, a read aloud with musical accompaniment and a session on making energy foods. Hope Jungblut, who climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, will visit the school, as well as guest speakers from Junction Creek.

Outdoor activities may feature snowshoeing, orienteering and building outdoor shelters for winter survival.

A Scholastic Book Fair will be held on the same day.

Parents are invited to join their children at 1:30 p.m. for reading activities in their classrooms. There will also be an opportunity to purchase books at the book fair.
