Northern Life was honoured at the Ontario Community Newspapers Association Convention in Toronto last weekend.

Publisher Abbas Homayed accepted the OCNA award for Community Service on behalf of Northern Life staff from association president Dave Armstrong, publisher of the New Liskeard Temiskaming Speaker.
Competing against community newspapers in Ontario, Northern Life received a first-place Community Service Award for the Community Builders Award
of Excellence program.

The awards program started in 2004 and was an initiative to celebrate the newspaper?s 30th anniversary. It is now an annual event which pays tribute to leaders in Greater Sudbury.

Community Builders honour people in eight categories: arts, economic development, education, environment, health care, sports and recreation, junior citizen and hall of fame.

The second place winner in the community service category was the Scarborough Mirror which initiated a local pride campaign called Stand up
Scarborough.

The third place winner was the Ajax Pickering News Advertiser which sponsors annual hockey and basketball tournaments.

Northern Life also won a third-place award for its effective use of spot colour in advertising.

In the General Excellence Awards category, Northern Life received one of the highest marks for its community news. The newspaper competes with
newspapers with circulations of more than 40,000.
