Prominent businessman and philanthropist Gabe Belanger has died, according to the mayor's office.
Greater Sudbury mayor John Rodriguez sent out a letter to the media with his thoughts on the loss.
“The entire (city) is saddened by the loss of one its most prominent
citizens,” the mayor said.
“Gabe left his mark on Chelmsford and the City of Greater Sudbury in
many ways. As an entrepreneur, he built one of northern Ontario's
largest car dealerships on the strength of his personality and the
warmth of his smile. As a developer, he brought indoor shopping to
Rayside Balfour and a large format grocery store.
“As a philanthropist, he contributed to many community causes and
recently gave the land for the new Villa St. Gabriel, named in his
honour. As a father and grandfather, Gabe has given our community
several solid young citizens to carry on his legacy.
“As a role model, he demonstrated extraordinary courage and dignity in
the face of a difficult illness. Finally, as a friend, his counsel and
support have meant a great deal to me over the past almost 30 years.
“On behalf of council and the citizens of Greater Sudbury, I want to
express our deepest sympathy to his wife Laura and the entire Belanger
