Ontario confirms 1,417 new COVID cases today, 72 hospitalizations, 32 deaths

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,417 new cases of COVID-19 today, and reported 32 deaths and 1,495 recoveries. 

Among the deaths reported today are two people between 40 and 59 years old, three people between 60 and 79 years old and 27 people over the age of 80. Twenty-six of the people who died were residents at long-term care or retirement homes. 

According to today's update, 72 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 since yesterday and 12 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units. 

Among today's new cases are 410 people from Toronto, 463 from Peel, and 178 people from York Region. 

Ontario has confirmed 109 new school-related cases today, including 92 student cases and 17 staff cases. There have been 1,121 school-related cases reported in the last 14 days and 3,626 school cases reported in total. Currently, 670 schools have one or more reported cases and three schools are closed.

The province's public health labs processed 33,440 tests since yesterday and the province has reported a 4.5 per cent positivity rate today, which is down from 6.1 per cent yesterday. The rate refers to the number of people who test positive compared to the number of tests processed. There are 36,671 tests awaiting processing and the province has completed 5.7 million tests to date. 

There are currently 12,822 active, lab-confirmed cases, which is down from 12,932 yesterday. According to Public Health Ontario, 535 people are hospitalized with the coronavirus, which is an increase of six people from yesterday. There are 127 COVID patients in intensive care units (even with yesterday) and 78 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 75 yesterday). 

To-date, the province has confirmed 98,162 cases of COVID-19 and reported 81,925 recoveries and 3,415 deaths. 

In Northern Ontario, all but one of the health unit regions are currently classified as green under the province’s new regional restrictions. It means the areas are permitted the broadest allowance of Stage 3 activities.

The exception is Public Health Sudbury and District, which is in the yellow (protect) restriction level.

There are 97 known active cases in the north. More than half are in the Thunder Bay area.

The breakdown of Public Health Ontario data for the rate of cases for Northern Ontario health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 58 cases, rate of 50.7 per 100,000 people. There are four known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 15.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 56 cases, rate of 43.2 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 58 cases. There are six known active cases, two of which are in hospital. The last cases were reported Nov. 17.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 105, rate of 125.8 per 100,000 people. There are four known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 17.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 210 cases, rate of 105.5 per 100,000 people. There are 21 known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 17. There are three people hospitalized in Sudbury as of this report. None are in the ICU.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000 people. There is one known active case. The last case was reported Nov. 15.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 89 cases, rate of 101.5 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 91 confirmed cases and two probable cases. There are nine known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 17.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 185 cases, rate of 123.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 189 cases. There are 52 known active cases. The last cases were reported Nov. 18.

The Ontario rate of infection is 660.4.
