Ontario reports 1,299 new COVID cases Sunday

Public Health Ontario has reported 1,299 new cases of COVID-19 today (March 7).

Today's report includes 1,105 recoveries and 15 new deaths, of which, one was a long-term care resident.

The March 7 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 10,389 active cases, which is up from 10,210 yesterday
  • 606 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 620 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 273 COVID patients in intensive care units (down from 278) and 179 COVID patients on ventilators 
  • The province reported 46,586 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 2.8 per cent positivity rate.
  • Another 20,057 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 11.39 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the 1,299 new cases reported today, 329 are from Toronto, 192 cases are from Peel, and 116 are from York Region
  • There are 78 active outbreaks at long-term care homes, 58 at retirement homes, and 20 at hospitals. 
  • The new cases reported today include 272 individuals aged 19 and under, 448 people between 20 and 39 years old, 355 people between 40 and 59 years old, 175 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 40 people aged 80 and over.

Variants of concern

  • The province has reported 828  lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7). 
  • The province has reported 31 cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
  • The province has reported 13 cases of P.1, which is the variant strain that originated in Brazil. 
  • According to Public Health Ontario, there are delays between specimen collection and the testing required to confirm a variant of concern. As such, the reports can change and can differ from past case counts publicly reported.

Vaccines

  • There were 30,192 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on March 6, which is down from 39,698 administered on March 5. 
  • As of 8 p.m. on March 6, the province reported 890,604 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 271,807 people have been fully vaccinated with two doses of vaccine.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 308,296 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 290,840 recoveries and 7,067 deaths, of which 3,876 were individuals living in long-term care homes.

Northern Ontario numbers:

  • North Bay Parry Sound Health Unit - 268 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, six known active cases.
  • Algoma Public Health - 200 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, five known active cases.
  • Porcupine Health Unit - 342 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, 12 known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 766 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, 173 known active cases.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit - 105 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, 11 known active cases.
  • Northwestern Health Unit - 500 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, 44 known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 1,883 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, 386 known active cases.
