Ontario reports 3,166 new COVID cases Friday

A technical error may have resulted in underreported case count numbers today, according to Public Health Ontario

Public Health Ontario has reported 3,166 new cases of COVID-19 today (May 7). 

However, the provincial update indicates a technical issue today may cause the case counts to be underreported for central east, central west and Toronto regions. 

Today's report includes 3,875 recoveries and 23 new deaths.

Today's deaths include one person under 20 years old, four people between 40 and 59 years old, 11 people between 60 and 79 years old, and seven people over 79 years old. 

Since yesterday, the province has reported 174 new hospitalizations and 41 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The May 7 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 1,924 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 1,964 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 858 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (down from 877 yesterday) and 611 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 600 reported yesterday).
  • The province reported 51,338 tests were processed yesterday.
  • Another 25,957 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 14.4 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 876 are from Toronto, 817 cases are from Peel, 300 are from York Region, and 64 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
  • Today's cases include 497 individuals aged 19 and under, 1,357 people between 20 and 39 years old, 893 people between 40 and 59 years old, 349 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 67 people aged 80 and over.

Vaccines

  • There were 144,724 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on May 6, which is up from 141,308 on May 5.
  • As of 6 p.m. on May 6, the province reported 5,885,485 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 387,484 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 486,223 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 444,342 recoveries and 8,236 deaths, of which 3,931 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,271.1 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 159.6 cases per 100,000 people, which is down by 10.5 per cent from last week (April 21 to April 27).

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 347 cases, weekly rate of 16.6 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 342 cases. There are 26 known active cases. 
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 374 cases, weekly rate of 11.6 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 371 cases. There are 22 known active cases. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 675 cases, weekly rate of 73.1 cases per 100,000 people. There are 120 known active cases. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 1,974 cases, weekly rate of 30.6 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,995 cases. There are 92 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 192 cases, weekly rate of 61.2 cases per 100,000 people. There are 13 known active cases. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 979 cases, weekly rate of 77.6 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 994 cases. There are 70 known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,130 cases, weekly rate of 25.3 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 3,131 cases. There are 41 known active cases.
