Like you I want to keep our city affordable while dealing with our challenges: the opiates crisis, people experiencing homelessness and our crumbling roads and infrastructure.

I want to invest in projects that will contribute to our community and our quality of life. It’s time to look for economic development that will create good paying jobs, grow our tax base and create spin-off opportunities that will support our post-secondary institutions.

Battery power is the future and momentum is growing globally to have this cleaner form of energy replace fossil fuels. Production and sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are on the rise with auto manufacturers and this is now trending to mining equipment.

Many of the metals used in the production of batteries are mined right here in Northern Ontario: nickel, cobalt and lithium just to name a couple.

In March, Premier Doug Ford announced the province would be investing $50 million in an electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing plant in Windsor. This is good news for Windsor, but where are the investments for Northern Ontario?

Sudbury produces some of the best nickel needed for BEVs and we are a renowned global mining hub. It’s time for us to capitalize on this emerging market and attract investments in battery technology to Sudbury.

It’s time for this city to elect visionary leaders that will fight for projects that will bring new sources of money into our community. I am confident that I will win Ward 5 in October and I challenge each of you to find and support other mayoral and council candidates that will join me in leading our great city to a better future for all of us today and tomorrow.

Mike Parent has declared his candidacy to seek the city council seat in Ward 5 in the October municipal election.
