The owners of a pair of Lively dogs that attacked and mauled another dog earlier this month will be in court this morning.

On Jan. 4, Terry Matthews let out her nine-year-old Norwegian elkhound, Tonka, only to find him being attacked by two other dogs a short time later. It was the second time in six months the dogs, which had a history of being left to roam the neighbourhood untended, had attacked Tonka.

Matthews fended the attacking dogs off with a shovel. Unfortunately, the elkhound's injuries were so severe, the dog had to be put down.

The owners of the dogs were ticketed in the summer for allowing the animals to run loose. After the attack this month, the animals were deemed to be "vicious" and seized by the city.

The animals' owners were charged under the city's Animal Control Bylaw for allowing the dogs to attack (by not taking precautions to prevent them from roaming) and for allowing the dogs to run loose.

They also face a provincial charge to not taking reasonable precautions to prevent the animals from biting or attacking.
