Madeleine Sauvé, client services co-ordinator with Warmhearts Palliative Caregivers, is looking for volunteers to provide compassionate support and respite for terminally ill individuals and their families.

Almost 200 volunteers cover Manitoulin Island, Greater Sudbury and Sudbury East.

Palliative care is offered when there is no cure for an illness. Every case is unique, says Sauvé.

For a couple of hours a week, volunteers do some cooking, minimal physical work, are there to listen and provide companionship. Those who speak different languages are encouraged to volunteer.

A pilot project is in the works at Falconbridge Extendicare, where a team of specialized volunteers in palliative care will be recruited to provide support at the long-term care facility.

Volunteers are needed for the Hospice Volunteer Visiting Program. Each volunteer must do 30 hours of training. Training sessions begin May 1 and are provided in both English and French. For more information phone Madeleine at 677-0077 ext. 224 or go to www.warmhearts.ca .
