A parent group is proposing Chelmsford Public School be consolidated with Chelmsford Valley District Composite School to create a junior kindergarten to Grade 12 school.

They're making the proposal at the Rainbow District School Board's regular board meeting tonight (Nov. 22).

Board staff want to send Chelmsford high school students to Confederation Secondary School or Sudbury Secondary School next year as part of its accommodation review of Rainbow board facilities.

They're also proposing consolidating Chelmsford Public School and Larchwood Public School and transferring Levack Public School's French Immersion students to the Chelmsford elementary school.

The parents' plan would save Larchwood Public School from closure and keep French Immersion at Levack.

Staff with the Rainbow District School Board will present their final recommendations on school closures at a special board meeting Thursday evening.

The board approved accommodation reviews for six of its eight planning areas late this past summer.

The initial staff recommendations included the closure of 12 schools, both elementary and secondary, building new ones and moving Grade 7 and 8 students to high schools.

More parent groups will have a chance to have their say Dec. 12, during another special board meeting, when trustees will receive formal delegations.

The final decision on the accommodation reviews is set to be made by trustees Feb. 7, 2017.
