Parts of Windy Lake Provincial Park have been closed due to an aggressive moose.

Park superintendent Erika Poupore said in an email to Sudbury.com that the moose has been observed in the campground since Sunday, Jan. 8, and the aggression began Monday, Jan. 9 when park staff went to the campground’s yurts.

“Since then there have been several incidents of staff being charged by the moose,” said the email. “Ontario Parks is now working closely with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Officials to monitor and assess the situation.”

There have been no reported incidents within the park that involve the public. Park staff closed the area as soon as it was determined there was a risk to public safety.

Poupore said the closure impacts the park's four yurts, as well as the Onaping Falls Nordics Ski Club trail within the campground, the ski chalet and the snowshoe trail adjacent to the campground.

“Ontario Parks will continue to assess the situation and may extend closures if necessary,” she said. “The closures do not include the cabins.”

The park superintendent said it is important to never approach wildlife, as doing so will cause the animal stress. “If you see wildlife in a concerning situation at a park, the best thing to do is report it to staff so appropriate action can be taken by staff,” Poupore said.
