City of Greater Sudbury Fire Chief Donald Donaldson reminds citizens that a burning permit is required prior to setting any type of outdoor fire that is not contained in an approved receptacle, as per municipal by-law.

Â?The City has a by-law to regulate open air burning to protect life and property,Â? said Fire Chief Donaldson, in a press release. Â?Citizens require a permit before they set an outdoor fire to burn piles of leaves, grass and branches.

Other types of fires are not allowed under any circumstances, such as burning lawns, ditches and garbage.Â?

Masonry or steel containers covered by a fine mesh screen and clay outdoor fireplaces may be used to burn grass, leaves, twigs and dry firewood any time without a permit.

Donaldson added, Â?as with all fires, itÂ?s important to keep close watch and to keep an ample supply of water nearby. If an outdoor fire does begin to
spread, immediately dial 911.Â?

There are three classes of fire permits. Â?Class AÂ? fire permits allow homeowners to burn small piles of leaves, twigs and branches in residential areas.

Â?Class BÂ? fire permits are available for rural areas where larger fires will not affect neighbouring properties. Â?Class CÂ? fire permits are issued for land clearing purposes.

Outdoor fires are not allowed between the hours of 8 am and 8 pm in the City of Greater Sudbury. Citizens are prohibited from burning garbage, treated or painted wood, rubber, synthetics, plastics, tar, building materials or any other material that may create dense smoke. Citizens who receive a complaint
from neighbours about excess smoke are obliged to extinguish their fire.

The City of Greater Sudbury is currently reviewing the bylaw to regulate open air burning. For more information, please call 671-CITY (2489). City by-laws are online at www.greatersudbury.ca.
