Cable company Persona Communications Inc. announced Monday it is closing its Montreal office and focusing a good part of business at its Sudbury-based operation.

The restructuring involves a merger of PersonaÂ?s central and northern divisions and is expected to save the company $1.5 million a year.

The companyÂ?s national workforce will be reduced by 28 positions or seven per cent.

There will be no layoffs in Sudbury. In fact, there will be an increase of seven staff members at the Persona building off Barrydowne Road.
The changes are expected to be complete by Jan. 3.

Â?This amalgamation will enable Persona to streamline its operations, while still providing the highest level of care that our customers have learned to expect from usÂ?, said executive vice-president and chief operations officer John Reid.

Â?We have a bilingual workforce in our northern division and a new state-of-the-art facility that was designed and constructed to service a larger customer base.Â?

In addition, through an extensive infrastructure build over the past three years, and through agreements with other telecom industry players, Persona now has a fibre network that spans from Sault Ste. Marie to Sudbury into Montreal via Toronto and Ottawa.

A company news release said the alignment of its national workforce was necessary and possible for Persona, as the company has largely completed its intensive three-year, $100 million capital expenditure program aimed to position the company to aggressively compete in the areas of digital cable, high-speed Internet and telecom services.
