Photos: Adding art and safety to Ste. Anne green stairs

Arts project has made the Green Stairs at Ste. Anne's Road a safer place by increasing foot traffic

The Green Stairs project, spearheaded by Coun. Joscelyne Landry-Altmann, has evolved since 2006 with the successful installation of several safety features.

Increasing pedestrian traffic was identified as being pivotal in achieving a safer area. Art and Heritage were introduced as a means to this end.

The Green stairs are now part of the Rainbow Routes History Hikes. The Woman of Power sculpture, created by artist Will Morin in 2009, was unveiled eight years ago as the first art installment in the area.

Art Students from the four neighboring secondary schools which include Sudbury Secondary, Marymount Academy, Collège Notre-Dame and St. Albert’s have participated, under the direction of their teachers, by submitting works of art created on wooden circles, depicting selected social themes.

More than 60 original pieces of art are framed and are currently on display along the stairs.

"Where there is art, there is community," Morin said to the crowd at the Art Walk unveiling on June 7.

"There's culture and that's what you bring to this hill. That's what you bring to this neighbourhood and that's what you bring to as a solution to some of the problems in our society."
