To celebrate Canada's 150th birthday, students and faculty from the School of Art and Design at Cambrian College painted a mural that is now on display at Tom Davies Square.

Cambrian College professor Johanna Westby and her students unveiled the large mural on April 25.

"We wanted to focus on something natural with a lot of movement and excitement," Westby said. "But also focus on the natural elements that are found here in the North."

In addition to the painting, the students also painted 10 Muskoka chairs that are representations of the 10 different animals that appear in the mural.

The chairs can be purchased for $200 with the proceeds going to student bursaries.

"The chairs are reflective of the mural, which means you can take a little bit of the mural home with you." Westby said.

Westby was recognized at the Mayor's Celebration of the Arts last year.

"We appreciate the arts coming from different parts of our community and here in Tom Davies Square." Mayor Brian Bigger said. "I think the mural is wonderful. As you look at it you'll see the water elements and of course in a community of 330 lakes it is a very important element as well as the features of the land and choice of colours."

For more information about the Muskoka chairs that are for sale, contact Johanna Westby at [email protected] or phone 705-566-8101 ext. 7217.
