Photos: Students spend a shoeless day to learn about poverty

École Ste-Marie students shuck their shoes to learn a lesson

Students and staff at École Ste-Marie spent the Thursday before the Easter long weekend without shoes to raise awareness of the millions of people in developing countries who can't afford proper footwear.

While they will not be obliged to walk barefoot outside the school building in the snow or on rocks, students were made aware of the discomfort of being shoeless for a day.

Their participation in One Day without Shoes will help students better understand the fact that millions of people, mainly in developing countries, cannot afford a good pair of shoes. While vulnerable to the spread of infections and serious diseases, children without shoes cannot go to school.

Students at the school are also collecting shoes until April 21 that will be donated to Soles 4 Souls, a not-for-profit organization committed to fighting poverty through the collection and distribution of shoes and clothing in many countries.
