More than a dozen Sudbury schools took part in provincewide walkout

Elementary and secondary school students in the Greater Sudbury area took part in the provincewide Students Say No walkout on April 4, protesting education reforms announced by the Doug Ford's Progressive Conservatives.

Among the education reforms announced by the province are a boost to class size averages, which teachers' unions say will result in a reduction in their ranks, high school students being required to take online classes, a cellphone ban, and new math and sex ed curriculums.

More than 800 schools in Ontario were expected to take part in Thursday's event, including more a dozen here in Greater Sudbury.

Local schools registered on the Students Say No website were Sudbury Secondary School, École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur, St. Charles College, St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, Princess Anne Public School, Marymount Academy, Lively District Secondary School, Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, Lockerby Composite School, Lasalle Secondary School, Confederation Secondary School and Chelmsford Valley District Secondary School.

Sudbury.com's student reporter, Annie Duncan, is a Grade 12 student at Confederation Secondary School and got an up close look at the frontlines of the protest as her cohorts lined up along Main Street in Val Caron.
